Nuclear Free Schools speaks on behalf of the "Back from the Brink" Resolution at LA City Hall
We were incredibly fortunate to join a coalition of civic organizations that share our vision of a world without nuclear weapons. PSR-LA, Veterans for Peace, and Beyond the Bomb (to name a few). The Back from the Brink initiative aims to coordinate campaigns to influence national policy and end our reliance on nuclear weapons. On the morning of August 8, 2018, five of our DOMHS students and alumni attended the LA City Council meeting where Councilmember Koretz introduced a resolution that urged the United States to sign the Nuclear Ban Treaty (TPNW). Our students showed up, repping their NuclearFreeSchool shirts (on sale for $15), and our very own Edgar Lopez spoke on behalf of the youth, urging the council to support the resolution.
I am proud to say that the council vote to approve the resolution, making Los Angeles the largest city to approve such a resolution for nuclear disarmament. Rafu Shimpo (Los Angeles Japanese Daily News) even wrote an article about the event: http://www.rafu.com/2018/08/council-honors-a-bomb-survivors-as-it-endorses-back-from-the-brink-resolution/
A couple weeks later, the California Senate took up the "Back from the Brink" Resolutions in AJR-30 and AJR-30 and passed the resolutions!
